food as medicine (CONTINUED)

“When diet is wrong medicine is of no use.  When diet is correct medicine is of no need.”

-Ancient Ayurvedic Proverb

For this one, I think a smoothie or a thicker blend would work.  There are many ways you can go with this one since being a woman and going through PMS is a very complex situation.

Cramps: Try this blend loaded with good FATS.  Almond Milk (Avoid animal products and dairy during this time so almond milk would be a good base.) Banana (De-bloater) Avocado & Almond Butter (I know you’re looking at the heavy amount of fat in this smoothie with Avo and Almond butter, but i’m telling you healthy fats are not the enemy and this will alleviate so much pain without the medicine — we want a good dose of Omega 3’s because studies show that this can reduce menstrual pain. ) Maca Root (Boosts hormone production – many women report less PMS and improved skin.)

Sadness: Don’t reach for the ice cream container.  Whip up this delicious smoothie that will elevate your mood.  Cacao powder (It’s like chocolate without all the added bullshit.  But with the antioxidants and endorphins. Hell yes.) Kale (WHOLE FOODS. Folate, a B Vitamin, affects neurotransmitters that impact mood.)  Banana, Almond Milk.

I also notice that drinking hot beverages during this time of the month helps a ton.  I fresh press a little bit of GINGER (Anti-inflammatory) into hot water with a little bit of lemon and that really soothes my stomach.

Sometimes (Well, most of the time) letting an upset stomach cleanse on its own and rest is the answer. I wouldn’t juice up some crazy concotion if you are having issues.  This is what I would do instead:

Peppermint tea. (Helps soothe the stomach, pain-killing herb)

If you are going to juice, I would do: Cucumber (I find cucumbers to be extremely soothing.) Mint (See peppermint.) Ginger (anti-inflammatory)
